Just imagine the look on your dog’s face if you come home with a dead bird.
It is hard to believe, but actually happening.
So what should you do?
Well, first off you should try to catch the dog so that you can properly dispose of the bird. Don’t throw it away and dispose of it in a landfill, they are not exactly sanitary places. Make sure you properly bag it and take it to a landfill.
As for the dog, if he is responsible for the death of the bird, he needs to feel the consequences of his action. Make sure you explain to him that he has killed a living creature and it is not okay. Have a short conversation with him about the consequences of his actions. But remember, you can only train him on the spot. It is hard to go back and forth during a conversation. So try to catch him before he gets into the habit of doing this.
If you believe that the dog killed the bird because he was in stress, you can try to take him outside and ask him to wait. You need to make sure that he is calm before you take him outside and ask him to wait. Take him to a great place and allow him to see the surrounding world and the people before you take him outside to do the task. In order to calm him down you may need to offer him some physical comfort before you take him outside. But remember, the bird must have been dead when you brought him home and must not have been in good condition, if you can follow these guidelines, you should be fine.
If you have not done any of these, your chances of catching him are pretty slim. Remember, animals are quite intelligent, he may have figured out how to train you.
